Rattle, rattle, rattle. The sound was a bit irritating to her sensitive ears now. She saw the rattlesnake, saw that it was over four feet away, curled up in the shade of an old cart. How stupid did the cold-blooded animal think she was? She didn't have a death wish, so of course Akita's large paws carried her in the opposite direction of the snake. This left the akita inu lingering near the mouth of the cave that led into the back entrance of the mines, where the thick-furred dog had made her home for the majority of the summer. Her thick fur was meant for cold climates, not an area that even knew what a dust storm was in the first place. The shade and cool air of the cave had been her sanctuary, and would be for a few more months. Venturing out meant risking heatstroke, so she had to scavenge around the mines for any food, or perhaps used her muscles to her advantage and beat down an innocent dog walking by with a meal for themselves. She had experience in fighting for her food ever since her family was killed, she saw how serious dogs got over food and shelter, and though she swore never to be like those dogs once before, now as an adult she realized sometimes you had to be cruel to survive. She had all but mastered the element of surprise and could take down almost any dog for the food in it's jaws that she needed just as much, if not more. Not too many came by the mines, the place was spooky and the snakes were a big turn off to most. To her, however, who had grown up in a more mountainous climate, was used to the familiar rattling, and could tell how close or far the snake was by the sound, so she was pretty safe around the poisonous reptiles.
She could understand the fear though. Her mother had warned her about how deadly the snakes could be, and had taught her about the poison- not to try to scare her, but to make sure she understood the reality of the danger. Whether this place was favored or not, and even though food for her was scarce, it was one of her few and far between choices in the summer. Akita lied down near the entrance, on top of the rails in the middle of the entrance, her dark brown eyes scanning the dirt and bits of rubble out in front of her in the outside world. The ground was dry and dusty, paw prints were hard to detect, so she was having trouble tracking any dogs. Relying on her ears and her smell, Akita closed her eyes and lifted her ears, sniffing quietly and listening closely for any signs of life besides that rattle rattle behind her. If she hadn't known better she would have just gone for the snake, but she wasn't willing to die over a few feet of scarce meat. She wanted something supple, like a rabbit or a pig, something that had eaten recently and wasn't just skin and bones. She wondered sometimes if snakes even had bones, because they sure didn't move like they did. Her white claws scratched at the metal rail tracks as she waited, her fluffy tail thumping against the ground once or twice, kicking up dirt as if to try and disguise herself. Come on, she silently pleaded. Anything bigger than a snake. She hoped, and the one who had that food being a small dog would be that much more ideal. She just wanted a good meal to get her by for a couple of days. It wouldn't be too long until fall, until she could hunt for herself again without fear of dying from over heating. Just a bit longer of hiding in a cave like a dog with a broken leg. She hated it in here, all the dust made her eyes itch, and it was constantly in the air. Stupid unstable walls.

Amaia yelped as she wrestled a rabbit, she smacked it and cried. She yelped again and went rolling down a meadow hill with the fluffy white creature. Standing at the bottom of the hill, she looked at it terrified. Her food always tried to fight her back and she hated the idea of that. She whimpered and lay her stub of a tail to her bum as she smacked at it and then yelped when it bit her fragile tiny paw. Holding her paw in the air, she let a woof at it and then pinned it to the ground finally killing it. She hated being so small and delicate, but at the same time it was a charm. She sighed and shook off dirt from her pelt as she picked up the dead creature.
Now, as it lay limp in her tiny jaws, the she-dog begin to jog off keeping one paw in the air from the bite. Blood and ground, not her thing. She sighed and looked at her paw, cursing softly under her breathe as she looked around for somewhere to settle down and eat the rabbit that was bigger then her. Seeing the mines, she stepped back a bit and whimpered. The snakes always scared her. No. Be strong, it was a nice place to enjoy a meal and be cool. Which is exactly what the gray dog wanted.
Padding over to a shady area, she settled down and looked around. Not seeing any other dogs she sank her teeth into it and then gulped down a tiny bit she had tore off, and then she saw it. A big dog that looked hungry as could be. With a scared yelp. Amaia curled into a ball, holding the pray close to her stomach.

Soft paw steps alerted Akita to the presence of another animal nearing the mines. A few sniffs and she knew it was another dog- a dog with food! A rabbit, she recognized by the smell of it's blood. She hoped it was plump. Dark brown eyes snapped open and the akita inu was on it's feet in a swift movement. She lunged forward, peeking into the shadows where the other animal was lying to see that the dog she had to fight for food against was a... schnauzer. What a joke. This was going to be almost too easy. Akita's tail fell and began to wag. "Hey, little one." The tan dog called, her alto voice echoing off the walls. She lowered her head so she was about eye-level with the toy breed, giving the female a small, almost reassuring smile. She wouldn't hurt the poor little thing unless she put up a struggle. Akita took note of the wound to the grey-furred animal's paw. She had gotten bit by the rabbit? What dog gets bitten by a rabbit? Akita laughed aloud at the sheer though. "Did it bite you?" She asked, trying not to laugh further. Her thin, hungry body already gave away her reason for being near, she didn't need to give the little dog any more reasons to try and run. She could surely catch the canine, but she didn't want to try and squeeze into a small crevice to fish her out if she tried to hide rather than just run, which was likely considering she was already injured. She didn't need to get bitten by little dog teeth, they were like needles.
With her tail wagging in a faux kindness, her large jaws parted and the akita inu said, "Say, little one. What do you say we share that rabbit?" Trying to be kind once in awhile wouldn't kill her. Besides, truth was- "No way you could eat that entire rabbit on your own, your stomach isn't that big. Only thing that can eat an animal as big or bigger than itself are the rattlers around here." Akita wisely said, placing a paw on the rabbit's back feet, pressing down so if the dog tried to run the rabbit would be ripped from her jaws that wouldn't be clenching it too tightly. She hoped, at least. She had never had to deal with a smaller dog before; maybe they had a trade secret to keep them safe from larger dogs. Even so, this was one lone, small, wounded female that would be as easy to snap as a twig for the year old akita inu dog. Perhaps the size that brought memories of Akita's sweet sister was the only thing that kept the schnauzer safe so far.

The schnauzer whimpered and looked up at it with her hazel eyes. She lowered her head, and let her ears lay back. She couldn't trust this dog .. it was big and big dogs were mean! She looked at her paw as it dripped with the warm red liquid. Sighing, she nodded her head "Y-Ya, anything with teeth will bite me with a chance .." she whispered in a shaky voice.
The tan dog was questioning about the rabbit. Asking if they could share, she looked down at the white creature that was curled against her stomach then nodded. Pushing it toward the bigger dog, she blinked "Take it if you want, I'm sure I can get something else" she woofed As long as my paw will take it thought the young female as she sat up and held her paw in the air so it wouldn't hurt more then it already was. She was small and fragile, she couldn't take the pain.
"I-Im Amaia" she woofed.
