The blue sky above appeared to glow as the sun filled it with radiant light. White puffs of clouds floated aimlessly in the vast space. In places where the thick grass was thin and absent, patches of pale sand sat. This sign indicated the presence of a prolonged drought. The serene landscape would seem like it was never touched by mankind, except a huge landmark that declared they had once been there; an old house worn by weather, but still standing strong and tall. An Australian Shepherd sat outside of this house, gazing at the building looming before him. Blake, the Australian Shepherd, walked a long way on a tiring journey from the mountains where his pack resided and decided to take a rest here. The building looked safe enough, at least as far as he thought. The canine sniffed the air, taking in all of the scents. A few critters hiding in the field... old dank scents from inside... but otherwise no other presence was detected. Cautiously, he stepped forward while eyeing the entrance with interest. Blake strolled up to the large wooden door and gave it a shove with his shoulder. Luckily the door wasn't locked and was loose off its hinges so it was amazingly easy to move; hardly any strength was required to open it. As the red furred male stepped into the ranch house, he could feel the light around him lessen and a soft chill down his spine. Not that he was scared or anything. Fear was not a feeling Blake felt often, and when he did the brute didn't show it.
An eerie presence clung in the air and choked his lungs, or maybe it was just the considerable amount of dust. Either way, Blake didn't feel like standing frozen at the entrance for long. So he made his way further into the dimmer lit room to have a look around. Not much was left in the house. He could imagine what the scene looked like a long time ago, when humans still inhabited it. Their things cluttered the house, the now dusty floors were freshly cleaned, and the humans wandered around. But enough about the past that didn't concern him. Blake snapped back into the present and continued to have a sniff around. If he were to make himself comfortable here, he'd have to check every inch of building before feeling sure enough to bring himself to sleep. The tired canine made a quick sweep of the first floor, but as he was nearing the stairs to the second, he heard a strange bump-like noise coming from another room. Ears perked and lips slightly curled into a snarl, Blake lowered his head and took another swift inhale of scents. Someone had to be there with him. Keeping his cool, the Aussie shook off his frozen state and slowly padded towards the entrance to another room. He had forgot to check the basement. Maybe another canine or some other creature was hiding down there. Although this was the most reasonable explanation, Blake couldn't help but feel a sneaking suspicion that someone followed him to the ranch and just made their presence clear. But that couldn't be, could it? "Anyone here?" his charming British accent echoed off the walls. Blake gazed off, waiting for an answer, an answer that could or could not come.
