Heat. It was so powerful, it seemed to have radiated deep inside Arrow’s bones. The enormous Malamute Wolf Cross padded silently into town, his tongue hanging out of his slack jawed mouth in an effort to cool his large body. His coat had just finished shedding, and still clumped up unflatteringly around his large haunches. It didn’t help, his double coat may have thinned, but it still trapped the heat and held it close to his body. He needed somewhere cool to rest his travel-weary body. The dusty town was as silent as his movements and his panting was just as inaudible. He almost seemed an unearthly beast of a canine ghosting through an abandoned and haunted town. The silence always followed him. It mocked him, the fact that he made no noise thanks to the predatory blood his mother had passed on to him. Try as hard as he wanted, he was surrounded by quiet and always would be. His hunter’s eyes narrowed a bit as he looked up, the sun dilating his pupils until they were invisible. He finally spotted a large building, something that would offer sanctuary from the heat he had tried for days to outrun. Ears flickered forward, straining to pick up any sign of something still inhabiting the worn schoolhouse. He didn’t hear anything and stopped at the door, his large black nose flaring to make sure that he wasn’t about to startle a skunk or possum. He glanced around, satisfied that no one was there. Just to be sure, he offered a tiny and small whine.
Then he forced his large mass into the room. The temperature difference was immense and the expression on his handsome wolf face was of complete and utterly relief. The building was a small one-roomed thing with a few windows that would allow wind in, if it ever decided to appear. He spotted an even better resting spot, a table. He trotted over, tail wagging as he once again seemingly floated over to it, body making no noise. Careful to stop his head from bumping against the table, he lowered himself with a groan. His jaws were widened in an immense yawn that showed his teeth, but that was all the sound he made.
He flopped his head down onto his large paws. He was an intimidating brute, from his size alone. It didn’t help that he was well-muscled from both genes and travel. But there was a look in his strange yellow-amber eyes that made some see past that to the real heartache that rested inside him. He huffed, his thoughts turning depressed, but made no other sound as his eyes descended and he drifted towards sleep.

Small droplets of saliva slipped off Kodi's tongue as glanced around the desolate landscape around him. The heat stifled the air, and danced as a mirage on the horizon line. The unbearable heat that radiated from the sun was making life miserable in the little valley. Kodi's tongue lolled out of his mouth in an effort to keep the smothering heat at bay. His feeble endeavor to keep himself cool by panting was failing miserably and he could sense himself slipping away.
Fighting the urge to just collapse and lay on the hot, arid floor of the desert, Kodi gave the land around him one final survey through half-closed eyes. An old rickety building in the distance caught his attention. Severely dehydrated, he half walked, half staggered over to the nearby schoolhouse. When he arrived at the threshold of the school house, he paused for a moment, catching his breath. Too fatigued to care whether or not someone else was in the building, he noisily heaved himself up the two stairs that led up to the little weather-beaten porch.
He thrust is nose into the crack in the doorway and nudged the old door open. Its rusty hinges squealed in protest, echoing through the large, empty room. Slightly disturbed by the sudden noise, Kodi flattened his ears. The difference in temperature was immediate as soon as he stepped into the cool, shaded room. Letting out a sigh of relief, he began to wander around the schoolhouse. His nails clicked quietly on the scuffed wooden planks as he roamed. He busily kept his nose to the ground, searching for some interesting smell or object. Sorely disappointed when he didn't discover anything, he stalked across the length of the room, surprised when he saw a fluffy dog tail.
Emitting a small woof of hello, Kodi ambled up to where the strange dog's head lay and tentatively licked his nose in greeting, hoping not to startle him.

Sweltering heat had been his companion for days. He had only found Saddle Creek as a last minute oasis, the last stop between here and death in a valley of dust and sun. The schoolhouse was a haven and one he didn’t plan to leave anytime soon. Arrow’s breathing deepened the longer he remained in the cooler room. His quiet panting lessened and eventually faded away as he stretched out languidly. It wasn’t long before he was sleeping in a dreamless sleep born of weariness. He wasn’t completely sure how long it had been since he had last met a living soul. Traveling was what he did and the days had always melded together into a seam of endless days spent walking. He preferred the forests and mountains, somewhere his large frame, obviously infused with wolf, blended in seamlessly. For some unfathomable reason, he found himself here. In the dusty dry town. It was different, to say the least. Arrow’s ears flickered at the sounds coming from the doorway. But he was so tired, his brain didn’t fully register them. He wasn’t a fighter, so he never took up the defensive. Instead, he merely absentmindedly scooted backwards a bit, settling his large head on his paws as he continued to sleep. That was a quirk of Arrow’s. He wasn’t a fighter by any means, and would gladly take blows than every initiate a fight. But he wasn’t fearful. If a dog decided to thrash him, though they had to be of considerable size themselves, it just happened. He’d lick his wounds and move on. The lick on his nose did startle him to a bleary awakening. He straightened, knocking his large head on the underside of the table. He winced but made no other nose. He stared wide-eyed for a moment, before his tired eyes focused. It was another canine, a male. He was large, though Arrow probably carried more weight. He was also staring with a sense of curiosity. Seeing as the lick had been friendly, Arrow offered a weak smile and allowed his tail to thump back and forth twice. He noticed the dog’s stance and catalogued it. It was a habit borne of necessity. He often had to overemphasize his own movements and postures to get his point across. Hence the relaxed ears and open expression that was being paired with a slight tilt of his head. He didn’t want the stranger to think he was in the least bit challenging. Even if the male looked to be as exhausted as he was, he didn’t want to press the matter. His weak smile grew to a more stable one as he waited.

The filtered sunlight coming through the window illuminated parts of the room. Kodi's heavy coat looked dull and unkempt because of its constant exposure to the sun. The underside of his maw was moist with the saliva that had dripped of his tongue. He held his salt and pepper jaw slightly slack, panting lightly. His wet nose quivered as he tilted his head up to smell the musty air. His deep, chocolate eyes studied the area around him curiously, looking for any sign of movement. He stood perfectly balanced on all four paws, his running even with his back.
He hastily broke out of his trance when the dog banged his head on the desk. Cringing, Kodi bunched his muscles and immediately fell into a crouching position out of instinct. As soon as the wolf mix began to wag his tail, Kodi forced himself to relax and peered curiously at the silent dog. As politely as he could, he questioned, "Hi, my name's Kodi. What's yours?"
As Kodi waited, the silence around the two dogs deepened and Kodi frowned a little, wondering why the world was avoiding this poor soul. Engulfed in thought, Kodi leaned back a little and plopped his haunches on the ground. He winced as a small splinter worked its way into his pad. Ignoring it, the young dog turned his focus to the strange canine that sat before him.

A light breeze had carried new scents to her nose. Two dogs inside the school house. Both male. She smiled a bit. Cautiously, she entered. She saw that one of the dogs looked a lot like her and the other was a dark tan with a black muzzle. "Hello, gentlemen." She said cheerfully. "I'm Raksha." She sat down a respectable distance away from the two males just in case they were unfriendly and looking for a fight.

Arrow’s heart leapt unbidden into his throat. It remained there, a little lump squeezing what did remain of his vocal chords. The german Shepherd in front of him sat down, startled at Arrow’s startle. That made Arrow relax a bit and offer a chagrinned expression, complete with an embarrassed smile and a flicker of the ears. He realized the male had probably not being watching him sleep long, since he was still panting. Arrow was hot, but he had already decided it was his fate to be that way until dark or winter came. Such was the curse of thickly double-coated fur.
Arrow’s heart thudded once again as the male spoke. He held such a demeanor of dominance that Arrow immediately adopted one of submissiveness. Arrow nodded, offering a sloppy grin. He was about to whine or scratch at his mouth, whichever one would get the point across. He hated it. Absolutely hated the way the canines responded to it, either it be embarrassment for him or pity, or the few that scoffed. It all wounded and he carried every, though few, encounter with him. He didn’t think this male to be harsh. But Arrow had been wrong at guessing other’s intentions before and his pelt carried more than enough proof of that.
He was interrupted by the appearance of another dog. This time a female, who looked similar to him. Unwillingly, he let out a rather faint whine at his predicament. She introduced herself coolly and didn’t stand as close. Arrow inclined his head and dropped his gaze in what he hoped came across as respectful and not cowardly. He still wasn’t sure if they were good company. He turned his strange hazel eyes back to the male, since he was standing closer and had spoken first. Arrow still wasn’t sure what to do. Part of him what to slip on past them, ears and tail low. He hadn’t spoken to a single body in months and now he found himself facing two. Two who were both waiting for him to respond.
His ears lay flat on his head as he lowered himself to the ground, with a huff. He wagged his tail back and forth once more, looking at the both of them with an expression open and friendly. He didn’t want them to confuse his silence with standoffishness. He licked his lips and whined a littlemore loudly and then opened his mouth in a wide grin.

Kodi's frown deepened as the dog's eyes darted towards the door. What could this strange dog possibly be doing now? Lifting up a large, well-feathered paw, he pawed the air in front of the other dog's face. His claws sailed gently through the air, a good six inches away from the other dog's nose. He stopped when he saw a small grin spreading its way across the wolf mix's face and was beginning to open his mouth to speak when a newcomer's voice broke through his thoughts.
Startled, Kodi whipped around and let out a menacing growl, his fur standing on end. As his chocolate eyes surveyed the young female that stood in the doorway, he refused to relax the tension in his muscles. He remained in a low crouch for a few moments before straightening up to his full height. In a gesture of dominance, he held his tail arced over his back and kept his ears facing back. Frustrated, he woofed tentatively, "What's your name?"
Kodi ignored the young male acting submissively behind him as he continued to stare down the newcomer. Confusion whirled around his head, what was it with this schoolhouse? First, there was only silence. Now there were two strangers, one of whom did not seem to speak, the other looking almost to be the silent dog's twin. Unable to steady his frantic emotions, Kodi held his position like a statue, waiting for something to make sense.

To say he was out of practice socializing might have been the understatement of the century. Arrow kept his posture submissive, hopefully not enough that he angered the dog into attacking. He’d met ones like that before that had thought him weak. He wasn’t sure if he fit the definition. He had more muscle mass than most, he simply chose not to use it. Arrow’s smile faltered as the Shepherd swiped at him. The move was one of annoyance and it made Arrow lower his chin to his paws, hopefully looking as small as he could.
The arrival of the newcomer had surprised Arrow. However, the male’s reaction made him hunker down and scoot back a few steps. There was no doubting the dominant aura the male produced. Kodi, Arrow reminded himself. The male deserved to be called y his name, even if it was only within Arrow’s mind. The female, as a testament to her will, only responded in a bored tone. Arrow’s ears flickered in interest at her words. He was still a bit shocked at the turn of events in his rather boring day and hadn’t been following the words of the encounter much. His brain sometimes did that. It would skip or tune out words simply because he didn’t need them. He could tell what the others were feeling by posture, since he watched it so closely to make sure his own reflected what he wanted it to.
He wasn’t sure if Raksha had been speaking to him, but offered a wide-eyed, sad expression. He kept looking up at the two of them, licking his lips and sighing. The male seemed confused and Arrow didn’t blame him. So he managed to utter a soft whine that burned. He hadn’t made noise in so long it hurt a bit and the pain flashed across his face. After completing that, he sat up. It was obvious he was relaxing a bit, his pridegrowing back into his large frame. He sat up, ears pricked forward to show interest in what was going on.

Kodi narrowed his eyes slowly as the femme spoke, slightly annoyed at her tone. Allowing himself to relax, he lowered his hackles and shook, releasing all the tension he had built up in his coiled frame. Pricking his ears forward in interest, he replied to the young female, "No. No, I'm not looking to fight. You just irritated me a little barging in like that." Letting a small smile spread over his face, Kodi marveled at the hint of sarcasm he had hidden in his tone. Somebody woke up on the wrong side of the bed today. Oops. he thought to himself, meeting Raksha's eyes evenly.
Upon hearing the little whine the dog behind him let out, he gracefully swept his long tail to the side, brushing the dog's shoulder in comfort. A part of Kodi wanted to step back and get to know the stranger behind but he didn't want to seem like a push-over to Raksha. Slightly wary of being surrounded, he figured the seemingly mute dog behind him wouldn't cause him any trouble and focused his attention on the figure in the threshold of the schoolhouse once more.

She was an adult and had the freedom to do as she pleased, but naggy Katya just wouldn’t silence until she mentioned something about her mother needing help, to which the elder scampered off to go assist Jewel with hunting or whatever, and the seductress let out a puff of exasperated oxygen, glad to be away from all those remarks about being a proper lady. Her plumed tassel swung around, merle follicles tickling her ankles in a tranquil action, much like the emerald blades of grass, worse than if someone had used a feather, to which she slipped out of that little trance and wondered what she should waste her time with today, considering she never had anything to do, ever. Her semi-flopped audits perked forward when the borders of the town came into view, and she finalized that she would chat with some natives today, be the friendly little dame that everyone knew her as.
** She had been born in this place, the first litter actually, to have graced upon the lands, though following her parents came more lovers, to which they created their own offspring, and so she had many others around her age, along with the migrators who came from all around, some even from foreign countries, which always intrigued her, accents had a certain tingle to it that drew her in like a fly to honey. Her tail continued to lash around as she entered the civilized area, smiling outgoingly at some older dogs, pups, teens, all the gangly sorts of creatures that dormed around, and she knew Saddle Creek like the back of her paw, and could probably walk around it at nighttime, blinded, dropped in the forest, and find her way back without hesitation, though at that thought, she knew Casanova, her older brother, would try that out just to mess with her, for they were quite close, and toyed with one another more than what most deemed healthy, but that was how siblings were meant to be, attached at the hip like they were, similar in their personalities as well, however, their grandmother saw no problem in the brute’s addiction to women.
** Finally she trotted on over to the School House, a more vacant section of the dusky land, no wanderers lurking around in the shadows cast by the walls from the beating aureate sun, to which she escalated the stairs and sauntered in through the back door, not going with that usual entrance, it was fun to switch things up once in a while. She was about to walk in when the powering scents of three canines came at her like a raging bull, to which her obsidian fleshed nares twitched around, and she dissected the fragrances, deeming two as males, and the last as a lady, to which a coquettish smile danced across her inked lips, sliding her way in with fluid movements, until she seated herself by the two boys, not wanting to bother the other girl, since she seemed to have purposely placed herself away from the others. She watched the exchange between the brutes, both handsome in their own ways, though Natalia always found the attractive traits in everyone, but they did have that masculine blanket about them that made her grin, both specimen large and muscled, meaning that they had control of this situation, if it resorted to that, but the femmes had their swiftness.
** She glanced over at the wolf hybrid, noticing how silent, like his near carbon copy a few yards away, who was currently grooming herself, to which the Great Dane/Mastiff/Finnish Spitz mix dipped her chin in a respectful greeting, only to look back at the stranger beneath the table when he let out a whine that sounded strained, and her pools softened with a bit of sadness, she wondered why he wasn’t talking, maybe he was upset about something? The mixed breed didn’t inquire him, for she didn’t want to be intrusive after having bumbled in a couple of seconds ago, and then her attention was directed at the long-haired German Shepherd when he let out a clump of terminology, tone edged with a bit of annoyance, to which she held back the snicker that wanted to ring out, only to then purr out in her coloratura syllables, “Relax darling, maybe he’s just shy.” Her silken appendage then wagged a bit to curl beside her left flank, thick coat courtesy of her Russian mother heating her up in this stuffy room, and she slipped on a gentle beam before adding, “Ah, but a pleasure to meet you all, I am Natalia.”
** Following that moment of embarrassment on her part for not introducing herself, she kept the cheerful expression on her face, at least until she saw the ochre and ink-furred dog reply in an annoyed voice to the other dame, to which the vixen quirked a brow, but kept her mouth shut, not wanting to anger anyone, though as the norm, she did side with the brutes on this one, no one really looked for a fight nowadays, so the question wasn’t really called for, though it was meant with no harm, she assumed. The speechless hybrid was then comforted by the sinewed stranger, and she held back the sound of adoration that wanted to escape, how cute it was to see that these two weren’t all macho, thinking themselves too good to be kind to others, and it really did warm her heart to see this sort of exchange, but she wanted to see how the bulkier example was going to react. She hoped no aggression would be seeped through to the core of this, since she disliked being around brawls, they always managed to get her into one with her short temper, wanting to prove to those vagabonds that started commotions that she wasn’t some weak princess.

Hearing the Shepherd’s words made Arrow’s submissive stance relax into one of contentment. He was simply glad there wasn’t going to be a fight right in front of him. He now remained laying down, yellow predatory-like eyes glancing between the two of them with interest. Arrow didn’t dislike either of them, he was in fact rather interested as to how the female managed to look like his twin. He was much taller, having wild wolf blood as his main blood-line and much thicker, mostly just in general. Arrow brought his gaze back over to Kodi, who was a rather nice fellow. Arrow smiled lopsidedly as the German’s tail tried to comfort him. It was a nice gesture, but he hadn’t actually meant anything by his whine other than trying to break the tension. Perhaps he was over-communicating? Arrow sat up, knowing that would lessen his submissive stance. As long as they had realized he didn’t want to fight, he figured that was good. He could relax now.
Arrow’s ears flickered upwards as yet another canine entered the building. He cocked his head, his expression one of amusement. He had just arrived in town and already was completely surrounded. He knew there were no humans here, he never ventured where they might be. He had the inherited trait of shunning all contact with humans both from fear of the passed-on knowledge that they hunted his kind and from the general wariness of something he didn’t know. However, he figured the town would have a few dogs. A few meaning he might see a glimpse of one every now and then. Now he was surrounded. He felt very out of his element and it probably showed on his expressive handsome face.
Arrow’s smile turned more amused as the female spoke. Shy? Perhaps. Right now though, it was obvious he was interested in what was going on. He had straightened to his full seated height and his predatory eyes studied everyone. Natalia. It was a beautiful name. Of course, to Arrow, most words sounded beautiful. He inclined his head to show that he welcomed her as well. He felt a bit embarrassed that he hadn’t done it to the others, but he really hadn’t had the chance. He’d been too startled at the male’s appearance and then nervous that there might have been a fight in front of him. He disliked all violence, but somehow, he never felt wrong throwing himself to get munched on if he felt the argument wasn’t warranted. Not that he liked too. It was part of the reason he always hoped there weren’t any brawls.
He swiveled his large head back over to Raksha as she spoke again. His ears flickered as she walked closer to him, his face a mixed expression of surprise and a hint of wariness. He hadn’t been with dogs in so long he was ready for anything. As she spoke though, he dipped his head. He shook it as she apologized, ducking his head to peer upwards at her lowered face. He split open his mouth so show that he wasn’t at all offended. It probably looked a bit goofy and he turned back to the others.
He guessed it was time to start trying to explain. He grew a bit nervous as he did. He lifted one paw and knocked himself in the chin, uttering a soft raspy whine. He dropped his paw and shrugged, a small smile upon his maw. If they didn’t understand, he’d have to come up with something better.

Was he smiling? How could one not be offended? She turned around. When she did, a raspy whine escaped her carbon copy's maw and he was scratching his chin. She tilted her head slightly. Slowly, the pieces came together. She nodded slowly. "You can't talk..." She whispered. She found this strange. A dog that can't talk? To her, that was unheard of. "Hm," she thought. "Maybe he was born with it or got caught in some sort of accident." Ok, the other female was beginning to bug her. She seemed to be a bit of a sleaze and the kind of girl who always had a guy by her side. One word came to her mind. "Player." she mouthed the word to herself. CHASE TABLE YO [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=background,http://oi48.tinypic.com/2e0jx2a.jpg][atrb=cellPadding,20,true][scrolly:h(252),w(164),sy] Chase pondered at the fact if he should join in or not. He had been following this Aussie around just for the fun of it, seeing each new 'play thing' was very exciting to him. He had always wondered what being a player was like. Not. Chase was a huge ladies man himself, courtesy of his messed up father and a few other 'role models' he had been in contact with by and by. As she wandered up here though, Chase had the funniest feeling they could all be related. Why, it was the Adam's family! Freaking idiots they were. Even the wolf-dog-ish looking creatures were dumb asses. That was sad. The black wold perked his ears and he crouched low behind a large brush, his nose and eyes not able to completely make out what was going on. So Chase was going to have to find out himself. The attractive black male pushed his way out and made his own entrance, yellow eyes scanning each member of the big family. "Well now, what do we have here? It's the whole ****ing crew! Mommy, daddy, little sissy and big brother!" he nodded to each of the canines as he named odd their positions. Chase snorted in disgust, pointing out all of the freaking canines were mutts. Mixed breeds. Well, maybe not the Shepherd boy, he was okay, but the rest of them just screamed disgust in Chase's pure eyes. The black Alaskan wolf backed out of the tiny circle, eying all his new victims of criticism. "So, what's up little family? How's it going? Y'all like mixing up the colors and creating messes? I'm ****ing glad! Good job, creating disgusting children like yourselves." Chase spat, eying the older femme Wolf dog directly, then the male. Chase yearned for a reply to snap back at. He knew these beasts wouldn't be able to out smart him, Chase was of a much better region of canines. The purist of lines, actually. Good, too, since Chase would've probably killed a few on his way. Notes; Sorry about his bad language... But it's just him. [/scrolly] |
