in the mirror;
As with most Spotted Hyenas, Bristol is a giant compared to the average stray. Weighing in at 148 pounds and standing 33 inches at the shoulder, she is no small being. Bristol has a solid build, and if she has been eating enough, can appear quite muscular. Tollie isn't the most feminine creature, but such is typical of a Spotted Hyena, what with females being at the head of the heirachy. She has crazy fur that sticks out in every which direction, and has an unbelievable growth rate depending on her surroundings. If it's as hot as Africa out there, she'll have the typical coat you'd see on one of her species. Around the winter, however, she might as well be a collie. Her mane, which is dark blonde in color, falls forward in a spikey manner, coming to the center of her crown. Her coloring is rather simple; Bristol's coat is a creamy light brown, covered in chocolate spots. Her ears and the fur around her muzzle are slightly darker than the rest of her body, and there are random rings of spots on her back and rump. Her eyes are hazel with mint green flecks.
the good, the bad, the ugly;
outside
[stern] & [natural leader] & [rash] & [quick thinker] & [quiet] & [wary]
inside
[optimistic] & [curious] & [insecure] & [empathetic] & [afraid of males] & [whimsical] & [joker] & [temper]
? stern ;
Bristol was raised to always be ready for the next attack, to be ready to defend herself and others. A crazy way to live? Maybe, but it's the safest. When Bristol's siblings didn't trust her enough to come out in to the world with her, it was a giant blow to her self esteem. She now feels that unless she proves she can save her loved ones from the crazy monsters this world yields, the ones she can't live without will leave her, too. In order to protect, you need to be in control, so Bris makes sure that others listen to her. She believes it's a "do or die" world, and without her guidance, her followers will fail.
? natural leader ;
The hyena was born responsible, with an instinctive need to lead others. If in a group, she'll try her best to assess everyone's needs, calm the disturbed, get everyone to a safe place, etcetera, regardless of how well she knows them. The hyena has an overwhelming need to assume responsibility of even the most simple things in her life, for reasons no one is quite sure of.
? rash — anger issues ;
If you've ever spoken with Bris, it's no secret that she has a bit of a problem with her temper. She tends to lash out at those around her when extremely irritated or upset. When she's like this, she tends to make rash decisions, and they usually aren't very safe. "Someone's sick? Pick 'em up, they'll be fine until we get to shelter." "A gang of criminals are barreling toward us? Run, I'll take every last one on myself."
? quick thinker ;
Bristol is usually pretty good at keeping calm under pressure, unless you piss her off, that is. Otherwise, she can think up a great plan in a short amount of time.
? quiet
This trait doesn't call for much explanation; Bristol is simply not that big on talking, especially to strangers. Can you talk with her for hours? Good for you, that's truly something special with this girl.
? wary — afraid of males ;
Bristol has a hard time trusting new faces. There's always the thought in the back of her mind that they could turn on her, leaving her crushed. The hyena has no fear for the males of her own species. No, no, they are weak, and she could easily take them on. What truly terrifies her is what these testosterone driven wolves, dogs, and pretty much every other male larger than her, can do. She will fight them, that's not a problem. One of her biggest fears is being alone and approached by a gang of brutes with dark motives. You see, she doesn't fear pain...she fears domination.
? curious — whimsical ;
If Bristol trusts the creatures she's with, she'll act like an overgrown cub. She has an incredible imagination, and endless creativity. She's got the curiosity of a young cub as well. She wants to know any and everything about the world around her, and will go to great extremes to learn.
? insecure ;
Bristol doesn't exactly love what she "sees in the mirror". She sees anything but beauty, and will become uncomfortable when others talk about her appearance. So, when complimented by someone she cares about, she'll be glowing for the rest of the day, even though just a night away, all of the confidence she may have built up will be erased.
? optimistic ;
Though it can be hard at times, Bris tries to stay positive, especially when comforting her loved ones. She does everything she can to make those she cares about see the bright side of things, even if she knows it's not true.
? big heart — empathetic ;
Tollie tries to see the good in everyone, and understand them. She doesn't like seeing others upset, so she'll say or do anything to make them smile. She has a way of putting herself in their shoes, and understanding just how they're feeling.
in the past;
A young hyena, recently banished, had given birth to a litter of three. The new mother, named Zuri, had two little girls and a boy, and named her eldest Bristol, her son Obi, and the youngest Sekai. Naturally, most of the responsibility fell upon the first born, and from the start, it was a cause of much stress. Soon enough, some men on trucks, who were later discovered to be poachers seeking new "pets" to sell in the black market. They shot her mother with tranquilizers, and scooped up the young cubs. After an eight hour trip by jeep in the chaotic savannah, followed by around eleven more hours by plane, they finally reached the United States. The hyenas rarely saw the light of day, having been stored in a cellar for most of their time. They were scarcely fed, and on weekends, they would take an hour trip to an undisclosed location, where they were put in a dog crate with a price tag. "$4,500.00" the sign on their cage read, and wealthy men would come poking and prodding at them, forcing the whelps to flee to the back of their prison. After their sixth time out in the market, a man was just handing over the money to buy Bristol, when there was a lot of shouting, and flashing lights of different colors. The illegal trading center had been busted by the police.
Unable to find a zoo accepting a whole litter of hyenas in their area, the officers packed them away in a mail truck where they would be sent to be euthanized by a veterinarian. That was the plan, and it was going fine, until a terrible storm came in with no warning. Hail cracked the windshield until it was impossible to see through, and rain made the road slick. It's not hard to imagine how the driver would crash, ejecting the packages and their contents out on the the street. After being hurled out on to the asphalt, their kennel smashed open, and the three little cubs waddled out, confused and afraid. They were taken in by a ragtag group of canines well aware of the virus's outbreak, and taught how to survive in this strange new world. The trio of siblings learned what berries were edible, and which were poisonous, and also how to hunt the local wildlife successfully.
Classic hyena behavior called for bullying the males. In her homeland, females ruled, but here, it was the other way around. Bristol just couldn't learn to accept this. Why should she be pushed around? Why weren't they bowing down to the women here? The males decided they'd have to break her. So, she was beaten and physically abused until she obeyed them. Eventually she decided to go out on her own. She tried convincing her beloved siblings to join her, but they were too afraid of the chaos that went on in this apocalyptic wasteland. Too afraid of desperate dogs and psychopaths. So, she left by herself, traveling to this new place she calls home.
